Squad Missions
Squads may use these templates to run missions and recommend new templates to be added to this section of the field manual. Only tried and tested methods should be included here.
Bandit Ambush
Briefing: The squad entrenches and stays hidden in an easy to secure area near a road or path where survivors often travel. Leader dresses as a fresh spawn or semi fresh spawn and attempts contact with traveling survivors alone. Friendly survivors are given food or assistance if needed. Attacking survivors are lured into the ambush. The squad should use non lethal tactics to secure and detain the bandit to teach the bandit a lesson. These tactics include taking out a leg, punching the head, handcuffing, etc. Quickly revive unconscious bandits once restrained so they do not respawn and are forced to deal with the result of their actions. The squad may choose to feed and provide medical attention to aid the bandits recovery so that they do not die quickly.
Difficulty: Hard
Recommended Equipment: Handcuffs, burlap sack, brass knuckles, small caliber weapons, stunning weapons and batteries, saline and additional food
Minimum Recommended Squad: Leader, Medic, Assist, Recon
Bandit Hunt
Briefing: Once a bandit location is known, the squad moves on the offensive to eliminate bandits and secure the area. Bandit activity should be confirmed before the squad attacks to prevent the deaths of innocent survivors that may just be defending themselves. Take caution to prevent tunnel vision and keep the squad moving tactically, it is easy to become entrenched and flanked by the enemy during a bandit hunt.
Difficulty: Moderate
Recommended Equipment: Minimum recommended equipment for squad positions
Minimum Recommended Squad: Leader, Medic, Assist, Recon
Base Raiding
Briefing: Any two or more community members that are together while a base or stash is discovered shall be considered a squad and should follow this guideline for base raiding.
The Hostile Environment Relief Organization is not a group of thieves. We commandeer equipment to aid our cause for good and disarm bases that appear to be equipped solely for the purpose of large scale death and destruction. The difference is that we must inform the previous owner of our actions and intent. We should not be sneaking and taking equipment from others without their knowledge of our presence. Any equipment taken from a base or stash by our members becomes community property of the Hostile Environment Relief Organization. Please use the following guidelines for raiding bases:
- At first discovery of a base or stash, do not take anything unless you are prepared to follow this guideline!
- Determine if the base appears to be balanced with survival gear or if it is heavily militarized with lots of high end military grade gear for the purpose of killing players. Survivor bases should not be disarmed!
- Mark the location on our map if you need to return and be better prepared for base raiding
- Keep track of items that are taken for the note. Item counts do not need to be specific, example: “5 automatic rifles, 2 pistols, 10 medical, 100 rounds of ammo” is acceptable. We want to make sure that we can re-supply appropriate requests with what we have on-hand in our base.
- Disarming heavy military/bandit bases note:
This location has had items commandeered by the Hostile Environment Relief Organization to aid our cause for good. If you would like to voice your concerns, we would be happy to hear your plea and re-supply those with good intentions. Keep this note and bring it to us to support your re-supply claim.

<date> - Re-supply requests and concerns should be handled by HEROs with the intention of trying to recruit them into our organization.
- Legitimate re-supply from those that are part of another community or do not wish to join may be handled via dead drop to protect us from retaliation.
- Discovery of survivor base note:
This location has been discovered by the Hostile Environment Relief Organization and does not appear to be used for the purpose of causing mass death and destruction. Your items may be commandeered if we discover you begin hoarding gear for the purpose of mass killing of people.
Stay safe out there. Hostile Environment Relief Organization, home of the DayZ HEROs: http://hero.kicks-ass.org
Base raiding for our community serves two purposes: the immediate equipment need and the potential to find other like-minded people in DayZ to join our cause.
Difficulty: Moderate
Recommended Equipment: Minimum recommended equipment for squad positions, 1 pen, 1 paper
Minimum Recommended Squad: Any 2 or more
Basic Combat Training
Briefing: The Hostile Environment Relief Organization is not a combat focused group, however, the need often arises to eliminate bandits by force and to do this effectively we need to keep our combat skills sharp. Basic combat training includes 2 parts: Weapons and Tactics training. Weapons training shall take place at the Novy Lug deer stand, also known as the “Firing Range”. Weapons training shall include the following:
- Shooting stationary targets at ranges of 100-400 meters from standing, kneeling, and prone positions while compensating for distance, elevation, and bullet drop. Instructor/spotter will use binoculars to confirm hits and report the potential body part that was hit.
- Run and Gun drill to consist of running until out of breath, then the instructor/spotter calls a simulated “shots fired” report. Subject should then engage a target as quickly and accurately as possible while out of breath.
- Moving target practice shall consist of the instructor or a volunteer wearing the appropriate body protection then running through cover and concealment to simulate partial target exposure during combat. Practice leading and shooting the moving target until a hit is registered, then provide the necessary medical attention to the target.
Tactics training shall take place in a small remote location at the instructor’s choosing. Each squad member should run the drills with empty weapons except for the simulated hostile forces. Simulated hostile forces shall use loaded weapons with simulated attacks on the squad. Tactics training shall include the following:
- Review the Squad Tactics video above before participating in squad tactics drills
- Making a single low threat contact that escalates to a higher threat level
- Making a single low threat contact that escalates to a higher threat level with multiple contacts
- Eliminating threats as a squad via non-lethal or lethal force methods
- Practice for each squad member to lead the squad through a drill
- Review and debrief after each drill to assess each squad member’s required role, what went well, and what is an opportunity for improvement
Difficulty: N/A
Recommended Equipment: 1 binoculars, weapons for training, 4 clips of ammo per person per weapon trained, 1 helmet and body armor, 8 bandages, 4 splint kits, 4 blood kits, food and water.
Minimum Recommended Squad: Any 2 or more (Weapons training), 5 or more (Tactics training)
Care Package Dead Drops
Briefing: A “dead drop” is an exchange of items or information between individuals without the two individuals needing to physically meet at the same time and place. A care package dead drop is an easy way for our organization to help out the public and advertise for our community at the same time. Each care package dead drop may be included in HERO Legends if it meets the following criteria:
- Only 1 care package dead drop per location, each location shall be considered “1 survivor helped” in HERO Legends
- Locations must be one of the following:
- Any city or collection of buildings on the coast
- Any city large enough to have a police station
- Any military base
- Package must be contained inside a small persistent storage container
- Package must be left on a main road or courtyard type area and be clearly visible
- Package must contain at least the following:
- 2 rations of food (eat twice from something)
- 2 rations of water (drink twice from something)
- 2 bandages
- Note that contains text similar to the following: “This care package has been brought to you by the Hostile Environment Relief Organization, home of the DayZ HEROs: http://hero.kicks-ass.org“
- Take a screenshot of the dead drop and upload it to HERO Legends! No additional info is required in the post.

A fire may be lit to provide warmth for survivors in a nearby shelter. The squad should be prepared for combat at any time because the fire will attract a lot of attention.
Difficulty: Moderate
Recommended Equipment: Digging tools, bags of lime, seeds, water sources, fire kit, matches, clothing

Hardcore Survival
Briefing: Hardcore survival mode puts your survival skills to the test. With hardcore survival, you survive using only what is provided in-game. No external maps, voice communication, reference material, etc. NO SPOILERS! Do not discuss spoiler events outside of the hardcore event that may reveal information including player locations, deaths, enemy locations, etc. These discussions should happen in-game.
The objective is to try and survive alone or with others as a HERO. Any squad play must be done with radios and in-game communications. You can simulate a pre-determined “bugout plan” by changing your Mumble comment with the following information while you play in Hardcore Survival:
- Location: <town> Use this to show a pre-determined bugout location.
- Radio: <frequency> Use this to show a pre-determined radio frequency to use in-game
Difficulty: Hard
Recommended Equipment: Minimum recommended equipment for squad positions, pen and paper, walkie talkies, map, compass
Minimum Recommended Squad: Any
HEROs for Hire
Briefing: If you would like to provide public service as a HERO or GOOD, watch or listen for the general public logging into our Mumble server and sending text messages for help. Survivors will find us through our public advertising and may stop by to request help. Help requests will be directed to our HEROs for Hire page. The survivor chooses from a list of pre-defined services available listed on the page. Here are recommendations to keep safe while providing these services:
- Have at least 2 HEROs or GOODs for every survivor in the mission
- Not every help request needs to be answered if you are unsure or we do not have enough responders available
- The mission should be executed quickly and efficiently then quickly part ways with the survivor(s)
- The survivor(s) will be required to join our Mumble server for coordinating mission details
- Listen for distinct pauses or breaks in communication with the survivor(s) to see if they are using alternate voice communication that they may be using to organize against your effort
- Do not register the survivor(s) for Mumble, chat with them in The Wasteland or move them into a tactical group for the mission
- Get the exact location of the survivor(s) and get into position on a separate server
- Get the DayZ name the survivor(s) will be using when logging in
- If possible, give the survivor(s) a separate server location where the squad is already setup
- Watch the player list for additional survivors logging in

Looting
Briefing: The squad chooses a location and moves in to loot the area. Tactical caution should be used near higher risk areas such as police stations and military bases. Squad members should call out gear they are looking for before the squad moves into the area to prevent communication spam when items are found. All squad members should be able to remain alert during higher risk looting missions.

Meet & Greet
Briefing: The squad moves into an area and sets up a secured perimeter to make contact with survivors. Leader attempts to make contact with survivors and the rest of the squad provides assistance depending on the situation and their squad roles. Roleplay Survival
Briefing: This is the only non-HERO mission template that may be used by any member to extend their game play beyond just the hero play style. Community rules still apply and will be enforced by LMAR, however The HEROs Oath and our general in-game philosophy or rules of engagement do not apply. You are not required to play as a group or squad play when roleplaying. Your characters may cooperate or even conflict with each other as long as you stick with the following guidelines:
- Your must choose your character’s name and back story before the play session and stick with it throughout the character’s life
- You may change your character’s name and back story after the death of your current role play character
- You must play in the “Roleplay Survival” channel in Mumble
- Set your Mumble status or comment to your in-game character name and a brief description of your character’s traits or backstory
- Your in-game character name must not be identifiable as a member of HERO
- You may not wear the HERO uniform unless you are role playing and adhering to the HERO philosophy and rules of engagement
- You may not use any gear acquired while tagged as a HERO* or GOOD*
- You may not use any gear from the HERO base
- It is recommended to start your role play character fresh on the coast
