KeymasterUse this thread to post ideas you would like to try out for missions. If we like the mission after it is tried and tested, we can move it to the field manual as a mission template.

ParticipantThis is not a new mission type but a variation I would like to try. There are three movement speeds in DayZ: walking, jogging, and running. So far most of our squad movement during missions is at the jogging pace.
I would like to experiment with conducting patrol missions at the walking pace. The point of a patrol mission is to make contact with other survivors and offer support as necessary. The benefits of jogging during a patrol are:
– Squad members are more difficult targets because they are moving more quickly
The benefits of walking are:
– Squad members develop no fatigue while walking and have steadier aim after contact
– Squad members can identify threats more easily when moving at a slower pace (situational awareness)
– Squad exudes confidence and controlThe drawbacks of jogging:
– Squad members quickly become fatigued and aim is compromised in a firefight
– Squad members cannot comprehensively scan sectors, especially buildingsThe drawbacks of walking:
– Walking targets are easier to hit than jogging targets. So walking patrols increase the chance of a squad member being killed on sight, but also increase the effectiveness of the squad at preventing or responding to such an incident. Therefore walking patrols may be preferred for large groups while jogging is preferred for small ones.

ParticipantIf we are running low on any military gear or just need to stock up, we could do a military area loot run. We could hit the following locations in order then store any extras in the tents afterwards:
Pavlovo Military Base
Zelenogorsk Barracks
Myshkino Military tents
Vybor Military Base
NWAFI left off Balota as it isn’t very likely you’ll find much of value here now considering the current spawn points and the popularity of the new prison island.
Along the way we could check for possible crash sites. If at any point we cannot carry any more gear, we can call it.
It would be ideal to have a recon team, an assist team and a team specifically to loot. The loot team can assist as needed of course. Specific priorities would be decided prior to the mission.

KeymasterWe have done a few very large walking patrols so far. The missions were very successful but I think the comfort level among our participants wasn’t very high.
I haven’t heard anything directly, but if anyone is completely opposed to walking patrols, please let us know here so leaders don’t keep planning them.
The main issue so far I think is that the Arma engine mechanics of walking are wonky causing lots of extra key presses to walk and it’s not quick react into a sprint if there’s combat.

ParticipantI’m interested to hear feedback on this as well. Dealing with an extra movement speed takes some getting used too. Idk how everyone else has their keybindings set up, but I have sprint set up as double-tap ‘w’, and I can toggle jog/walk with ‘ctrl’. This means that I can go directly from walking to sprinting, which helps reacting to contact. Going from walking to jogging or vice-versa takes one hit of the ‘ctrl’ key.

ParticipantHow about Guardian Angel, lock down a city with sniper spotter teams. Protect the bambis.

KeymasterWe used to do military loot runs as an actual mission, maybe I need to plan more of those in the future.

ParticipantI like the Guardian Angel idea. Maybe a bit of a twist on the farming missions we do sometimes. If we only had snipers it would have to be in one of the larger cities.
The walking patrols make me very uneasy. Walking through large city like that is just asking to get shot. Though the initial reaction from other players may be, “WTF are these guys doing?”. The only way it might work is if we all have cowboy hats and somebody is playing the theme song from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

KeymasterSo far the only time we have done walking patrols is with 10+ people. It’s a very scary sight to see on the other side to see such a group calmly walking through the city.
I agree that the walking patrols definitely leave us exposed, but I think the “Wow!” factor balances it out.
